Pelé – The King of Football

Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento in Brazil in 1940, Pelé became far more than a great goalscorer. He became one of the most recognisable sporting figures in history and helped take Brazilian football to a worldwide audience.

His legendary career was built predominantly with Santos FC and the Brazilian national team, before he later played for the New York Cosmos.

The Only Three-Time World Cup Winner

Pelé won the FIFA World Cup three times, in 1958, 1962 and 1970. As of 2026, he remains the only player in history to have won three men’s FIFA World Cups.

Pelé was just 17 years old when Brazil travelled to Sweden for the 1958 World Cup. He scored six goals during the tournament, including a hat-trick against France in the semi-final and two goals in Brazil’s 5–2 victory over Sweden in the final.

He remains the youngest goalscorer in World Cup history, youngest player to score a World Cup hat-trick, youngest player to score in a World Cup final and youngest World Cup winner.

Then came another World Cup title in 1962, followed by perhaps his most famous triumph with Brazil’s legendary 1970 World Cup team. Pelé scored 12 goals across four World Cups, from 1958 through to 1970.

Pelé’s club career was equally remarkable. He joined Santos FC as a 15-year-old and went on to become synonymous with the Brazilian club. Santos records credit Pelé with 1,091 goals for the club across his extraordinary career.
